bass ... when for a short period, Mel
became part of a group known as The
Counts.
Marty went on to become a fine
oral surgeon in Boston; Jerry a Los
Angeles businessman, and Bob a stock
broker ... Mike gained fame as a TV
producer (The Mike Douglas Show,
etc.) ... Only Mel remained in music,
and when he and wife, Gail, were wed
in 1970, Mike came here to be his
best man.
FOR 10 YEARS, Sam Lerman
worked at the old Ben & George
Delicatessen on Dexter ... after being
broken into the business by In , Willis
... Sam went on to buy Ben & George
Delicatessen ... and became a noted
name for years in Livonia ... with Iry
working for him.
I DON'T THINK anybody is
waiting for it anymore ... But time
was when people were looking for a
Chinese junk ship that was being
brought to Detroit ... to be transferred
into a Chinese restaurant ... It was to

Detroit River ... Who knows, maybe it
is still secured in a mound of solid
cement back on the Yangtse in China.
SEEING SIGNS ... by Steve
Borman ... on a roadside restaurant
between here and Cleveland ... "Eat

Basket that opened in Tel-12
Shopping Mall on Telegraph ... On
Woodward in Birmingham, Sol's other
food mastery — concocting salads at
Alban's Bottle & Basket — was a
standout.

THE PROPRIETOR of Ruby
Foo's in New York was not Chinese ...
As a matter of fact, she was the well-
known American nightclub singer,
Bernice Parks, whose family created
Ruby Foo's sernice knew her
Oriental food and maintained an out-
standing restaurant worth visiting
before or after a Broadway show or
movie, or any time folks wanted to
dine well ... Ruby Foo's on West 52nd
Street had a long and elaborate menu
... On it were recommended dishes
like watermelon soup and Cantonese
sesame chow mein ... I remember try-
ing the Peking Duck, which was
served in two courses ... The first con-
sisted of crispy duck skin, with a spe-
cial sauce, on steamed oriental buns ...
The second was the meat of the bird,
served with vegetables and wine.
BECAUSE OF THE tremendous
number of people who passed through
