European Jews who had begun to
move to his neighborhood.
"I was stunned by their faces,"
he remembers. "They looked dead-
ened, empty. The people had num-
bers tattooed on their arms and I
didn't Inlow why. I knew the fami-
lies of these newcomers, but no one
would tell' me anything. I was con-
fused. I didn't understand."
The Holocaust Chronicle con-
tains thousands of color images
drawn from archives and private
collections from around the globe.
Most had not been published pre
viously. More than 30 color maps
show ghettos, concentration and
extermination camps, deporta-
tions, Jewish populations, and rel-
evant military operations.
The book is formatted to give
particular attention to the key
Holocaust years, 1933-1946, in a
dramatic word-and-picture layout.
Anchoring the book's pages is a
detailed, 80,000-word timeline of
Holocaust related events. During
the war years, the timeline entries
run virtually day by day.
Attention is given to Holocaust
topics that generally are not well
known to a general audience.
Readers can gain insight into
Jewish resistance, women and the
Holocaust, and the fates of
Gypsies, political dissidents,
homosexuals and Jehovah's
Witnesses. American and other
Allied responses to the Holocaust,
as well as the Catholic Church and
the Shoah, also are explored.
A Web site, wwwholo-
caustchronicle.org, contains the
book's complete text.
