Piece Of Looted Art
Staying In Hungary

New York/JTA—An Orthodox Jewish
high school basketball star shared the
Most Valuable Player award at a recent
national All-Star game.
Tamir Goodman, who scored two
points, passed out eight assists and had
three steals, won the award at the 27th
Annual Reebok Classic after leading his
team of players from the Washington
area to a 112-101 victory over a team
representing the United States.
Goodman, who made national head-
lines last year when he announced he
would not violate Shabbat when he
plays college basketball, is slated to
attend Towson University in Maryland
in the fall.

New York/JTA A Jewish woman who
is suing Hungary for Jewish-owned art

of the 10 paintings she is claiming
remain in a state museum.
The lawyer for Martha Nierenberg,
who fled Hungary in 1944 and now
lives in Armonk, N.Y., described the
offer as a "goodwill" gesture.

JNF Unveils
Ad Campaign

New York Jewish National Fund rolled
out its first major national print adver-
tising campaign this week in Newsweek.
The campaign is intended to boost
awareness of water shortage in Israel and
JNF's reservoir expansion, water recy-
cling and conservation projects there.
JNF's primary goal is to appeal to
baby boomers whose parents have sup-
ported JNF in the past. The headline,
"Your parents planted trees in Israel.
Now it's up to you to give them
water," is intended to communicate
this message.

stop pitbull owners from tagging their
dogs with the same yellow stars the
Nazis forced Jews to wear.
The owners of these and other fight-
ing dog breeds, which have been banned
by Berlin authorities, are planning a rally
next month to protest what they call
racist attempts to wipe out their dogs.

War Crimes Suspect
Headed To Trial

Vilnius/JTA—Lithuania plans to
restart the trial of a suspected Nazi-
era war criminal after the nation's
laws were changed to let the elderly
defendant monitor proceedings from
outside the court.
Aleksandras Lileikis, 92, is
accused of handing over at least 75
Jews to Nazi death squads during
the war. His trial was halted last
September after the judge ruled that
the defendant's poor health left him
unable to attend the proceedings.

Anthrax Scare
Hits Hillel

An anthrax scare
New York/JTA
forced more than 30 students and staff
at the University of Pennsylvania
Hillel in Philadelphia to evacuate their
building.
The evacuation was ordered after
the director of the school's Hillel
chapter, Jeremy Brochin, opened an
envelope that contained an antisemitic
letter and white powder identified by
the letter writer as anthrax, an infec-
tious disease.
Brochin was quarantined for about
two hours until the city's hazardous
materials unit determined the powder
was benign
