an and African rhythms, were dramat-
ic in their presentation. Slides were
shown of Ethiopian Jews who live in
poverty — very touching. The kids
and their families live in God's given
country, Israel, where they have to
learn new customs — a great improve-
ment for our Ethiopian Jews.
So while all their music goes on, you
have to admire their willingness to
assimilate and become Israelis. We
should give them all help through Fed-
eration's Annual Campaign.

Thanks For
Seder Memories
May I take this opportunity to convey
my family's gratitude — and I trust I
speak for many — to Libby and Andy
Beider, friends and fellow congregants of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek for their
initiative in bringing together immi-
grants, mostly from the former Soviet
Union, with local Jewish families who
invite them to seders ("New Traditions,
Age-Old Story," April 14).
As second-year veterans of the Bei-
ders' match-up campaign, we learned
firsthand how very important it is.
These Jews grew up virtually without
any semblance of a Jewish life and,
unfOrtunately, many of them even
after coming to the United States
aren't eager to take advantage of the
Jewishness all around them. They were
estranged much too long and resemble
the fourth-son in the Haggada, the
one who has no capacity to inquire so
you must tell him.
The family we had the privilege of
inviting to our seder this year — not
unlike the one of last year — is typical.
They comprised three generations and
this was the very first seder for all of
them, despite the fact that they have
lived in this country for seven years.
I doubt that one seder can miracu-
lously transform those lost Jewish
souls, but it is an important first step.
Moreover, we intend to continue the
relationship and invite them to cele-
brate other Jewish holidays with us.
Needless to say, they were already
invited to our seder next year. I am
sure that the others who heeded the
Beiders' call will do the same.
Toda rabba [thanks very much] to
the Beiders, a very special pair, for
enabling us to perform the mitzvah, a
cornerstone of the Pesach seder.
