O.U. Testifies
Regarding Suicide

Israeli Tech
To Boom

Washington/JTA — The Orthodox
Union is testifying before a Senate
panel in favor of a measure that would
give doctors an alternative to physi-
cian-assisted suicide.
The Pain Relief Promotion Act
would instead give doctors addition-
al protections to prescribe controlled
substances to relieve patients'
extreme pain.

Romanian Jews
Protest Group

Romanian Jewish
leaders are calling on their government
to take action against a movement that
they accuse of fomenting racial hatred.
The Legionaires movement,
which bills itself as a cultural group-
ing, had ruled the country during
World War II and led pogroms dur-
ing which thousands of Romanian
Jews were killed. Jewish leaders
accuse the group of being "pro-
foundly anti-democratic, totalitari-
an, xenophobic and antisemitic."

of religion doubled during the 1990s,
according to a new poll.
Most of the coverage focused on the
role of religion in public policy and
not on theology or spirituality, accord-
ing to the poll conducted by the
Washington-based Center for Media
and Public Affairs. Protestantism and
Catholicism accounted for almost two-
thirds of all coverage, while 12 percent
of the stories focused on Judaism.

Seder Held
In Shanghai

Shanghai/JTA — More than 100
Jewish expatriates celebrated Passover
at the Ohel Rachel Synagogue in
Shanghai.
Among those attending the seder,
led by Lubavitch Rabbi Shalom
Greenberg, were survivors of
Auschwitz.
It was the third time this year that
Chinese officials allowed Jewish resi-
dents of Shanghai to use the syna-
gogue to celebrate a Jewish holiday.

comprise 45 percent of Israel's
exports in 10 years, according to a
study by two Israeli economists.
The Israel Democracy Institute esti-
mates that high-tech exports will total
$37 billion in a decade, with a poten-
tial growth rate of 10 percent a year.

Israel Matza
To Ethiopia

Two Israeli planes
carrying food and supplies for
famine-stricken areas of Ethiopia
landed in Addis Ababa.
On the order of Israel's military
rabbinate, the aid includes matza
instead of flour, which could be used
to alleviate the hunger of many
more people. Ariel Kerem, Israel's
ambassador to Ethiopia, told Israel
Radio the decision seemed "a bit
odd," since the starving people are
not Jews and not required to observe
the laws of Passover.

Iran Planning
Israel Attacks

Israeli security offi-
cials are warning that Iran has decid-
ed to launch attacks inside Israel's
borders, on Israeli diplomatic offices
abroad and on El Al airliners follow-
ing Israel's planned withdrawal from
southern Lebanon in July.
Israel's three top daily newspapers
quoted security sources as saying
that Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed
group fighting Israel in southern
Lebanon, has already started plan-
ning attacks.

Passover Marked
At The Wall

Israel's chief rabbis
held their traditional welcoming
reception for thousands of Israelis
who flocked to the Western Wall
Plaza on a Passover pilgrimage.
Meanwhile, Israeli police allowed
members of the right-wing Temple
Mount Faithful group to ascend to
the Temple Mount complex, but
only in groups of two in order to
prevent any disturbances.
