BESS ALTUS, 77, of Southfield, died
April 19. Mrs. Altus was a bookkeeper
for Altus Non Ferrous Metal Company.
She is survived by her daughters
and sons-in-law, Rona and Saul
Grossman of Southfield, Susan and
Gary Weinberg of West Bloomfield;
grandchildren, Jodi and Robert
Galperin, Lisy and Craig Starr, Beth
and Blake Lipman, Andy and
Donyella Grossman; great-grandchil-
dren, Jade Starr, Arielle Lipman and
Jacob Galperin. Mrs. Altus was the
beloved wife of the late Norman
Alms.
Interment at Machpelah Cemetery.

Bloomfield Hills, died April 21. Dr.
Ambinder earned his bachelor's and
master's degrees from City College of
New York in 1950. He interned at
Kankakee State Mental Hospital. He
went on to earn a Ph.D. in psycholo-
gy from Cornell University in 1955.
He then joined the faculty at Wayne
State University in the School of
Education. At Wayne, he served as
chairman of the faculty, achieving the
rank of full professor. In 1966, he
worked at a Peace Corps training
camp in Puerto Rico. In 1977, he
received a law degree from Detroit
College of law.
Dr. Ambinder was a professional
child and family advocate. He taught
educational and clinical psychology at
Wayne State and trained many of the
psychologists in the Detroit area. He
also taught law at Detroit College of
Law, where he was an adjunct professor.
He founded the Learning Abilities
Laboratory at Wayne State University
and served as chairman of the School
and Community Psychology Program at
Wayne.
As president of the Novi Board of
Education, Dr. Ambinder was among
the first to focus on the needs of chil-
dren in divorce settlements. A certified
marriage counselor and divorce
lawyer, he pioneered a mediation
process for failed marriages. With for-
mer graduate student Sandra Lyness,
he founded Midwestern Educational
Resources Center in 1967. Dr.
Ambinder was a member of Temple
Kol Ami.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years,
Ruth Ambinder; son and daughter-in-
law, Dr. Richard Beth Ambinder of
Maryland; grandchildren, Alexander and
Michael; brothers and sisters-in-law,
Howard and Nancy Ambinder of
Dearborn and Dr. Robert and Aileen
Ambinder of New York.
Interment at Beth El Memorial
Park. Contributions may be directed
to the American Cancer Society or
Temple Kol Ami. Arrangements by Ira
Kaufman Chapel.
LILLIAN APPLEBAUM, 94, of
Southfield, died April 16.
She is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Howard and Lorraine
Applebaum of West Bloomfield; -broth-
er and sister-in-law, Irving and Mae
Roth of Chicago; grandchildren, Ron
Applebaum, Renee (Jeff) lesson. She
was the beloved wife of the late David
Applebaum; mother of the late Robert
Applebaum. Services and interment at
the Adat Shalom Cemetery.

PEARL ELISE BERNSTEIN, 87, of
Ann Arbor, died April 20. Mrs.
Bernstein had a master's degree in edu-
cation from Wayne State University and
was very involved with Beth Israel and
was bat mitzvah in 1998 at the age of
86. She was very active with Hadassah
and Women's American ORT.
Mrs. Bernstein is survived by her
daughter and son-in-law, Giselle and
Michael Doner; grandchildren, Mark
and Daniela Dover, Dana Otis Heirich
and Doug Heirich; great-grandchildren,
Kyra and Marissa Heirich; sister, Daisy
Wynn of New York. She was the
beloved wife of the late David Bernstein;
loving mother of the late Jerome and the
late Samuel Bernstein. Interment at
Beth Abraham Cemetery.
