Sinai Guild On The Move

For 46 years, Sinai Guild volunteers
have provided thousands of hours of ser-
vice helping families in the surgical wait-
ing area, dressing newborn infants for
their trip home, operating a gift cart and
assisting with health screenings and
career days.
While many hospital auxiliaries offer
volunteer services,
the Sinai Guild also
provided philan-
thropic gifts to the
hospital, founded in
Detroit to serve the
Jewish community.
Over the years,
the guild has raised
millions of dollars
through the gift
shop, tribute funds
and special events,
allocating this sup-
port for medical

Goldman, guild president.
Goldman said there are many volun-
teer opportunities at the DMC's outpa-
tient centers and at the Maisel, Berry
and Rose Centers as well as DMC's
Lahser Campus. "We also expect to be
very involved in raising funds for the
cancer center, which
will be built in
Farmington Hills,"
she said.

Guild members were instrumental,
through the Women in Philanthropy
Breast Cancer Awareness event last
October, in raising $100,000 to reno-
vate the cancer area at Sinai-Grace
Hospital and equipment at the Maisel
Center.
Since the consolidation of Sinai and
Grace hospitals, the guild has entered a
new phase, moving from Sinai-Grace
Hospital in northwest Detroit to offices
in the Samuel and Lillian Hechtman
Building in Bingham Farms. Guild
members continue to focus on the
health needs of the Jewish community
through volunteerism and philanthropy
but with an emphasis on Oakland
County
"We want to stay active and
involved and we appreciate the office
and staff support that the Detroit
Medical Center is providing. The new
location is more convenient for mem-

Oakland region. This is a rapidly grow-
ing community and the hospital has an
increasing number of Jewish patients.
The guild will help us with outreach to
the Jewish community and assist in
meeting volunteer needs at the hospital,
which expanded recently, and in our
outpatient centers."
The guild wants to maintain conti-
nuity of its mission and programs. "We
hope to continue our relationship with
Akiva and Hillel day schools as well as
with new Americans working through
our outreach programs with them. We
also will be working with Jewish
Apartments and Services to help them
with their new prescription program
for seniors and expect to assist other
Federation agencies that have health-
related needs," said Mrs. Goldman.
Elsa Silverman, staff manager of the
guild, and Susanna Berger, Russian
translator for the DMC, moved to the
new offices in February
