n the starkness of the Holocaust
Memorial Center in West
Bloomfield, you soak in Adolf
Hitler's rantings, deceptions, propaganda
and "Final Solution." Quickly, you're
transfixed by how, despite it all, the
Jewish people have survived and pros-
pered.
To see symbols of the Shoah up close
is to experience something almost surre-

prison clothing and yellow stars, the
tender age of some of the victims —
you walk away shocked, and forever changed. The political,
social and cultural winds that gave rise to the Third Reich
never die once they chill you through words, pictures and
artifacts.
The Center stands in memory of the six million Jews who
died and 5,000 European Jewish commu-
nities that were destroyed in World War
II. Jews were targeted for annihilation,
but Nazi Germany also killed
scores of gypsies, Soviet POWs,
Polish intellectuals and others.
Today's cover package (pages
14-21- ) and related stories set
the- tone for our community's
Yom Ha-Shoah commemoration
this Sunday in advance of
Holocaust Remembrance Day
on May 2. Our editorial appears
on page 39.
As we remember those who perished
and those who survived, let us work together not only to
teach the next generation about the horrors of the Shoah,
but also to expose the terrorists taking aim at people whose
only fault is that they are different.

Rabbi Of The People
ii e's scholarly, articulate and respected — hallmarks

of a top-tier rabbi. But Rabbi Daniel Nevins also
is something more.
He's a person you feel blessed to know.
I've watched him grow into one of our
community's most beloved spiritual lead-
ers at a relatively young age. And I've mar-
veled at how people of all ages have con-
nected to God through his warmth and
wisdom.
This weekend, Rabbi Nevins will be
installed as Adat Shalom Synagogue's rab-
Rabbi Nevins
binic leader (page 65). He's a man of
boundless zest, hope and inspiration. All
of Detroit Jewry benefits from having him in our midst.

Shabbat Shalom!
