community that our children today
can speak (reversing the Haggada's
traditional role): At ptach lo ("You
open the discussion").
The children, the new generation,
have somehow been inspired or
intrigued or stimulated with an
interest in Jewishness; they must
take the initiative to try to bring the
adults with them into more dynamic
participation in Jewish life. "You
shall teach them diligently to your
parents." The best teachers, after all,
are those who ask the best questions.
I once heard a beautiful drash
which speaks directly to this point
for Pesach and beyond: Too many
parents/adults in our community are
"dayeinu Jews." It is good enough
for them to be involved minimally
in Jewish life. But it is not good
enough for us or our children or the
generations yet to come.
To be a "dayeinu Jew" is only
meaningful when we put a question
mark after the word "dayeinu." Are we
doing enough as Jews? Are we partici-
pating and learning and teaching
enough? How can I be a better Jew?
Let the answers not end with the
seder night. Let us learn from each
other and strenghten our future. ❑
