Avern Cohn has a healthy respect for
history. And tradition.

Founding chairperson of the Leonard
N. Simons Jewish Community Archives,
this federal district court judge has
lectured widely on topics of local
historical interest.

It's his personal history - going back
to the paternal grandparents who
taught him respect for traditional
Jewish life - that has prompted him to
establish the Samuel and Maly Cohn
Millennium Fund.

With his wife, Lois, he's chosen six
Orthodox educational institutions as
beneficiaries of the Jewish Federation/
United Jewish Foundation Millennium

Campaign for Detroit's Jewish Future.

Judge Cohn hopes that this charitable
tribute to his grandparents will help
make day school education more
affordable for families of modest
means and will strengthen the ability
of Orthodox day schools to cover
ever-rising costs of educating students.

Avern Cohn links respect for the past
with hope for the future as a key to
maintaining the vitality of the Jewish
community.

But it's also a way of saying thank you
to a pair of beloved grandparents.
