The Jewish Federation of

Lee Ryan Mandell was called to the
Torah recently as a bar mitzvah at
Temple Kol Ami.
Lee is the son of
Helaine and Les
Mandell and broth-
er of Lindsey.
Delighted grandpar-
ents are Bea and
Edward Mandell.
He is also the
grandson of the late
Lottie and Morrie Posen.
For his mitzvah project, Lee vol-
unteered to work more than his
required hours at Yad Ezra, the Oak
Park-based kosher food. He found
delivering food to the needy and
homebound most meaningful. Lee
also participated in Temple Kol
Ami's annual food drive.
A seventh grader at West
Bloomfield's Abbott Middle School,
Lee enjoys football, street hockey,
basketball, in-line skating, music,
computers, video games and televi-
sion.

Metropolitan Detroit has a gift
for every bar/bat mitzvah: a
handcrafted tzedaka box paint-
ed with scenes of Jerusalem by
the Israeli artist Emanuel. Each
gift, presented by the honoree's
synagogue on the special day,
will be accompanied by a color-
ful "City Tzedakar brochure
that explains the importance of
tzedaka, a Hebrew word that
commonly is define as "charity"
but really translates as "justice."
Sharon Hart, chairman of the
Federation/Synagogue
Committee, said the Federation
wants to do more than wish
mazel tov to every child.
"A bar or bat mitzvah takes on
certain responsibilities of adult-
hood," she said. "Giving tzeda-
ka — helping those in need
and supporting the Jewish
community — is one of those
responsibilities. It's a worth-
while habit in which every
member of the household can
participate."

mitzvah program, call Kari
