under the umbrella of the federation.
For current activities, get a copy of
the Shofar, the Anglo-Jewish newspa-
per in Chattanooga. The paper also
carries news of Jewish interest in near-
by cities such as Memphis, Nashville
and Atlanta.
Other organizations in
Chattanooga include a very active
chapter of Hadassah, the Jewish
Bureau of Education, the Jewish
Community High School and a sum-
mer camp for kids.
Synagogues in town include the
Reform Mizpah Congregation.
Founded in 1866, the temple has ser-
vices every Friday evening and
Saturday morning. One of its famous
members was Adolph Ochs, owner of
the Chattanooga Times. He later
bought the New York Times and when
he moved to New York City, he con-
tinued to be closely affiliated with his
hometown and Mizpah.
B'nai Zion is the Conservative
synagogue. The shul has daily reli-
gious services and is proud of its
once-a-month Shabbat Experience
for Farriilies and friends. B'nai Zion
also is proud of its fabulous art col-
lection. There are beautiful tapes-
tries, Torah covers, fiber art, leaded
glass chapel windows and a sculp-
ture to memorialize Israel's Olympic
athletes who were murdered in
Munich in 1972.
The third congregation in
Chattanooga is the Orthodox Beth
Shalom. Called "small and person-
able," this shul opened its doors in
- 1959. The present building was com-
pleted in 1979. The congregation's
youth group is called the Chattanooga
Choo Choos.
One final interesting Jewish site in
downtown Chattanooga is the Siskin
Museum of Religious Artifacts. There
are over 400 objects in the collection,
which has items from the 16th to the
20th century.
Secular sites are many in this lovely
southern town.
The Bluff View Art District is a
must for art lovers. You'll find gal-
leries, museums and a wonderful out-
door sculpture garden. There is also
