Brian Indianer, 10, of West
Bloomfield, a fourth-grader at Hillel
Day School in Farmington. Hills, has
been a wide receiver and quarterback
in the league for three seasons.
He says, "On top of being fun, the
games give me a chance to see my
friends out of school and make new
ones."
The league even comes with
cheerleaders, directed by Polly
Prime. They are on the sidelines
every Sunday, learning cheers for the
league's "Super Bowl" game on June
4. Tailgating at the Super Bowl will
include hot dogs and chips in the
parking lot, with friends and family
rooting for their favorite pint-sized
Lion. ❑

late March, practice has been held
once a week, where passing and catch-
ing drills are mixed with lessons on
formations and pass patterns.
The teams are broken
into two groups: first-
through third-graders and
fourth- through sixth-
graders. Games are 40
minutes of non-contact,
continuous action, using
minimal equipment.
"Penalties do not over-
whelm fun, activity and
learning," says Polly
Prime, a sports coordina-
tor at the JCC who
coaches along with
Wineman, "We focus on
understanding and fol-
lowing the rules for safe-

capturing the flags and working as a
team for that touchdown. It gets
intense, but so far, there has been no
roughhousing," Slobin says.

"It is actually quite
hilarious to watch a group
of 7-year-olds play," says
Tracy Slobin of West
Bloomfield, the football
mom of Stephen, 7, a first-
grader at Meadowbrook
Elementary. He is enrolled
in the league for the first
time.
"I am amazed at how
good the children listen to
