"We gave them hope, shelter and direction, and most of them eventual- ly arrived in Israel." Bartov, who married the young woman he had left behind, become an editor and columnist in Israel, with a two-year assignment as foreign corre- spondent in the United States. His son, Omer, teaches German history, now at Rutgers and next year at Brown. While pursuing his newspaper career, Bartov also served on the broadcasting authority board, helped establish Israel's Russian theater and works with Yad Vashem to keep the memory of the Holocaust and events of World War II alive. The history of the Jewish Brigade is a film project of Chuck Olin Associates of Chicago. Olin, an Emmy Award-winner, served as director. Producer Chuck Cooper had a cousin who was a member of the brigade. The documentary premiered in 1998 at the New York Jewish Film Festival, and has been screened at other Jewish film festivals in America and overseas. For Olin, the PBS screening means the largely untold story of the Jewish Brigade will be accessible to a mass audience of Jews and non-Jews. "Since the movie has been seen mostly by the Jewish community, at least in this country," he says, "I'm very intrigued with its impact on non- Jews. It represents a really different look at Jewish identity, especially dur- ing the Holocaust." "I hope that many people will see the film and get a better view of what happened during the time of our brigade," Bartov says. "I want young people to know the tragedy and the kind of hope that filled their parents and grandparents as Israel became a state." • KABUKI of Auburn Hills 12 MILE Now Featuring Sunday Brunch From 11am - 3pm WE ARE NOW OPEN MONDAYS CLOSED SUNDAYS Auburn Hills Location Only (gtzEico 031956tp Reservations Suggested 248-373-4440 This place is highly recommended by Marvin Q.
