Danto rebounds with a new director
and new systems to gain state approval.

hen she first started her
position as nursing home
administrator last
December, Angela Szumlinski
received a "Titanic Swim Team
1912" T-shirt from her staff.
The Marvin and Betty Danto Family
Health Care Center in West Bloomfield
was under the gun after its previous
administrator failed to report to the
state of Michigan an incident where an
Alzheimer's patient wandered outside
for 30 minutes in January 1999.
Inspection reports filed in October
1999 were less than glowing, and in a
letter to Szumlinski, state inspectors
wrote that they would be back in
December to see if corrective measures
had been made.
A letter from the Michigan
Department of Consumer and Industry
Services, Bureau of Health Systems was
received last week, stating the facility

had "achieved and maintained substan-
tial compliance status."
Szumlinski credits increased vigilance
and monthly meetings with residents'
families for the good report.
"We have a clean slate," she said.
"And the letter is being framed."
Danto's previous administrator, Linda
Funds of Huntington Woods pleaded
not guilty to a misdemeanor count of
failure to report abuse, mistreatment or
neglect of a patient. A pre-trial is set for
sometime after July 31 in 48th District
Court in Bloomfield Hills. The maxi-
mum penalty upon conviction is 90
days in jail and a $100 fine.
Located on the Applebaum Jewish
Community Campus, the Danto Center
is a preferred provider of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Although owned and operated by HCR
ManorCare, a nationwide provider of
long-term care based in Toledo, the
Danto Center works with Federation to
provide for the religious and cultural
needs of its Jewish residents. ❑

Reform vote on gay ceremonies
not a Jewish move,' says Agudath Israel.

"My sense was before the resolution
passed, and now that it's over, that while
other groups may disagree and disagree
strongly with our stance, that ultimately
our friends will remain our friends and
our detractors will remain our detrac-
tors," said Rabbi Paul Menitoff.
Among Detroit rabbis, the resolution
also was deemed controversial.
Gay and lesbians and many liberal
Jews welcomed the CCAR resolution,
which passed overwhelmingly in a
voice vote, though it is not as strong
in its wording as some had originally
expected. The resolution does not use
the words "marriage" or "wedding"
and supports the decision of rabbis
who choose not to officiate at same-
sex unions as well as those who do.
Nonetheless, Orthodox leaders have

eform rabbis have "gravely
misled not only other Jews,
but the entire world by fos-
tering the notion that Judaism toler-
ates homosexual acts," an Orthodox
group is charging.
Agudath Israel of America attacked
the Reform movement's acceptance of
gay commitment ceremonies in a
quarter-page ad on the April 14 New
York Times op - ed page.
The ad was in response to a March
29 resolution adopted by the Reform
movement's Central Conference of
American Rabbis, which asserts that
"the relationship of a Jewish, same-
gender couple is worthy of affirmation
through appropriate Jewish ritual."
CCARS executive director was not
overly concerned by the advertisement.
