I The Original Emcee Joel Grey reflects on his Tony and Oscar-winning role in "Cabaret" T o el Grey says he enjoyed play- ing the role of the evil emcee in Cabaret. It gave him the opportuni- ty "to make that character dark and repellent and dangerous because he was the embodiment of Nazism," In a recent interview; Grey spoke from the heart about his career and his Judaism. Although he's enjoyed all of the Broadway shows he starred in, his favorite was Cabaret, he says. His performance on Broadway was good enough for a Tony Award in 1966 and an Academy Award for the film version in 1972, "It was wonderful winning those awards because both were great entertain- nient events and unexpected in most ways, especially the movie, because I thought Al Pacino would win for The Godfather," he heartily admitted. How did he feel as a Jew playing the lead role as the evil emcee? it was a real opportunity to say something politically that was close to my heart — to make that character as had as possible. And as seductive as he was, I think by the end of the show or the movie, you know he's not a good guy, not at all, intoned Grey. Grey said his Jewish background was a factor in his performance because he knew how horrible the Nazis were and he was able to real- istically- interpret feelings only a Jew could express. Grey quite obviously enjoys roles on Nazi Germany. He recently acted in a movie about Adolph Hider titled _Empty Mirror "It's a sort of a monologue look- ing back over Hider 's life as if he was in hiding and wasn't [dead]," All pasta dinner entrees come with all the above he said. "All the key figures in Hitler's life appear in the film, which is a dream." Grey plays the role of Joseph Goebbels, Hider's infamous propaganda minister. "Researching the role as Goebbels just chilled me to the RISTORANTE •••• • 14.1111***JA , tbo rg, OF ADVEZ r 171 Joel Grey won the 1972 Oscar_for Best Supporting Actorfir playing - the evil emcee an the movie version of 'Cabaret." bone almost the same way my visit to Dachau did several yea.rs ago," he lamented, adding, this Goebbels was a very bad. cat, very bad, and more evil than Hitler."
