The Jewish Vocational Service Women to Work program was hon- ored with a Diamond Award from Women in Communications of Detroit. The award is given annually to an individual, business or organization whose policies, practices, advertising or other activities enhance the status of working women. On a non-sectarian basis, the JVS Women to Work program helps local residents start over after a divorce, the death of a spouse or because of a spouse's disability. It is a five-week program, held two days a week, to help participants build self-esteem and develop job-search skills. Life Fund Cites Mr. Berkowitz The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit recently announced that Alfred Berkowitz, a supporter of education in both Jewish and general communities, left $250,000 in his will to Federation, which has cre- Alfred Berkowitz ated the Alfred Berkowitz Jewish Life Fund for education ini- tiatives. The fund will be part of the Hermelin-Davidson Center for Congregation Excellence, established by the Federation/United Jewish Foundation Millennium Campaign for Detroit's Jewish Future. Mr. Berkowitz, who never mar- ried, gave away millions before his death. After World War II, he joined his father in Michigan Bag and Barrel Co. in Detroit and, in 1951, founded Enterprise Industrial Sales. A longtime contributor to Federation's Annual Campaign, he established several funds with Federation, including one that per- manently endows the campaign and others that provide scholarships and educational opportunities in Michigan and in Israel.
