oters in the West
Bloomfield School District
gave the green light
Monday to a $52 million
package of improvements and
upgrades for the district's nine ele-
mentary and secondary buildings.
Results, still unofficial as of
Wednesday, showed the proposal
had passed 1,984 to 1,707. With
Z4,714 registered voters, the total
vote of 3,692 represented a 14.9
percent turnout.
"I'm very grateful the bond
passed," said board member Fran
•Denawetz. "Once again, the com-
munity has affirmed it is solidly
behind quality education for its
youth."
Proceeds of the bond will be used
to expand fine and performing arts
facilities, add technology, upgrade
outdated facilities and provide more
classroom space.

uled at a time inconvenient for
senior citizens.
"If they wanted to hold another
vote with an even playing field, we'd
like to see how it would come out,"
said Larry Brown of the opposition
group West Bloomfield Citizens for
Responsible Schools.
Hotly debating the criticism was
Steve Wasko, spokesman for the
6,163-student district. All deadlines
set by the state were met or exceed-
ed, he said. "In fact, the length of
time for the informational campaign
was two times as long as it was for
the 1996 bond proposal."
The plan was first presented to
voters at a heavily publicized and
well-attended informational meeting
on Jan. 31, Wasko said, and the dis-
trict held about two-dozen presenta-
tions, all open to the public.
Absentee ballots were sent out in the
district's Laker newsletter, mailed to
all residents, not just parents of stu-
dents.
Wasko characterized criticism of
the bond campaign as "misinforma-
tion put out by people who would-
n't have voted for the proposal any-
way." ❑

Corrections

• The Wolf-Gadon wedding
announcement (March 31) should
have indicated that the couple
were married on April 2.
• Identification for two pho-
tographs from the Tamarack
Camps fundraiser was inadver-
tently switched (at right).
• In the Community Calendar of
April 7, a photograph of Rabbi
Daniel Nevins of Adat Shalom
Synagogue was mistakenly used
instead of that of Rabbi David
Nelson of Congregation Beth
Shalom.
• The last line was dropped in the
Mazel Tov! article, "Year Of
Simchas," April 7. The article
should have concluded: "It is only
going to get better," Dr. Felsenfeld
said. "I can't believe it, but it's true."
