News for publishing such a telling arti-
cle of this barely surviving synagogue,
which holds a special place in my
heart.
I think the article truly conveyed
the flavor of Beth Isaac, which epit-
omizes some of what I believe are

Although the article stated that
Beth Isaac wasn't asking for money
(and they never would), I'd like to
add a footnote: In their search for
the answer on how to survive, dona-
tions sure couldn't hurt either.
the most amazing qualities of
Judaism — family, acceptance, love, •
pride and survival. Although it is a
small building with not nearly
enough congregants, Beth Isaac con-
tinues to stand tall and tries to hang
on. Many people think the only way
to have a solid Jewish heritage is to
be surrounded by many Jews. That
certainly can be a wonderful experi-
ence and one that I am living with
today. However, 'even though it is a
very different experience growing up
in a small Jewish community, Beth
Isaac proves you can still find your
Jewish roots far from the masses as
well.
I write as someone whose great-
aunt and uncle donated property for
the synagogue to be built, who
attended Sunday school (though I
must admit like many other children,
not always happily) and was bar mitz-
vah there. Although I am no longer a
regular visitor to Beth Isaac, I have
still tried over the years to attend Fri-
day night services prior to my parents'
yahrtzeits and for Passover seders. I
hope somehow the synagogue can find
a way to survive for longer than the
five years "guess-timated" in the arti-
cle.
Beth Isaac is one those small,
but meaningful reminders that Jews
come in all shapes, sizes, colors,
ages, genders and maybe most
important, locations. We really are
From Both Sides
Of Their Mouths
When Israel's Prime Minister Ehud
Barak announced a contemplated
pullback of forces from the security
zone in Lebanon by next July, the
Lebanese and their de-facto overlords,
the Syrians, argued that Hezbollah's
terror attacks against Israel were justi-
fied since the Israelis are occupying
Lebanese territory. Logically, therefore,
Israel's intention to end the occupa-
tion should have elicited a favorable
response from Lebanese and Syrian
authorities ("Lebanese Dance," April
7).
However, true to their unpre-
dictable behavior, Lebanon and Syria
have announced that the planned
Israeli pullback from southern
Lebanon will not end the border hos-
tilities. Lebanon has uncovered a new
anti-Israel weapon, the Palestinian
refugees in the south while Syria hint-
ed that it is prepared to unleash the
Palestinian refugees in Beirut, who are
under Syrian control.
Hezbollah, on the other hand,
weighed in with a brand new pretext
to resume its attacks against Israel's
northern villages: The Iran-backed ter-
rorists have announced that seven vil-
lages located within Israel's borders are
Lebanese territory and thus legitimate
targets for continued attacks.
It is within this highly charged
Arab "conviviality" that President Bill
Clinton is attempting to put the
Israeli-Syrian negotiations back on
track.
In view of the Arabs' hate-filled
acrobatics, some people in Israel are
beginning to say to themselves
"enough is enough" and realists on
both sides of the Atlantic are coun-
seling Israel to keep its powder dry
and its defense forces vigilant as an
antidote to the vagaries of Arab
diplomacy.
