Mariel Ostrower from Kibbutz Ein
Dor is also staying with the
Petermans. She said she has lived on a
kibbutz for five years and likes it. "We
do things together; it is a communi-
ty," she said. "Everybody works, wash-
es clothes and eats together. We live
life together."
Her family is not observant, she
said, but does celebrate the holidays.
Mariel is "looking forward to meeting
new people," which she doesn't often
get to do living on the kibbutz. "I
want to learn how others see
Judaism," she added. "So many peo-
ple look at it in different ways.
"I want to show students how I live
Judaism every day. I am also looking
forward to going to school with Dan
this week."

Nachman, chairman for all three teen
missions, said the mifgash "gives the
students the chance to bond prior to
the trip." The relationships they form
this week can help them to enjoy each
other's company more during the
summer experience, he added.
Rabbi Michael Moskowitz of
Temple Shir Shalom said the mifgash
is "a great opportunity for the kids to
get to know each other. The teens
from Michigan can hear about Israel
from their peers and not just from
me."
The rabbi noted that none of the
Israeli students he spoke with at the
pizza dinner had been to America
before. "It is a worthwhile exchange
for students to learn about our
lifestyle and us to learn about theirs,"
he said. "We're all Jews." ❑
