the strangest thing was that even
though I saw you do all these things, I
was never there.
"Even towards the end of my
dream, when you got off the plane
and all of our relatives were there to
welcome you home, I wasn't one of
them. But I felt, and you did, too,
that you and I had a special bond, and
that we felt each other's presence.
That made the experience even more
spiritually fulfilling."
I am 16 years old now, and I
remember what I thought at that
Passover seven years ago: "Whatever,
Grandpa, it was just a dream."
As I reflect upon his words now,
the true meaning of Passover becomes
clear: family, freedom and fulfilling
one's dreams. As I am now preparing
to fulfill both of our dreams, I wonder
if he was really right — that my trip
to Israel will change me into a better
Jewish man. Who knows?
Only time will tell ... but my bet is
with Grandpa. ❑

children. The chain must not be bro-
ken. The legacy must continue.
By the time the whole seder was
finished, it was about 1 or 2 o'clock
in the morning. All of us tiredly
kissed our grandparents good night.
Little did we all know that this
would be the last seder that my
grandfather would share with us.
But his job was done — my father is
well equipped to pass on all the
teachings to his children. ❑

thing" from the Haggada. Darkness and
the burning bush, slaves, the four sons,
a bottle of wine, Moses or Tziporah, a
taskmaster or the baby Moses — all of
these spirits have shown up at our house
to participate in our seder. People come
with kavana (intent) — and that
inspires all to participate willingly We
have games and coloring books on the
tables, songbooks, rap songs, plays, even
movies about Passover, to enhance this
seder.
Over the years, we have explored
the deeper meaning of Passover. As
we've grown to appreciate The Family

Participation Haggada: A Different
Night, we've retired the Maxwell
