Rappaport, and
my mom, Mona
Rappaport. One
can always count
on 'the folks' to get
the job done!
"The 'arrivals'
for the Oscars are
always the best
part. The fans in the stands have been
camping out for days so when the
first limo arrives, the frenzy begins.
"I love to see who is with whom. I
have photographed so many famous
twosomes who are no longer two-
somes! Ted Turner and Jane Fonda,
Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere,
Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson,
Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland.
"I also love to photograph the stars
who bring their families. Some of my
favorites include Sophia Loren with
her two handsome sons; Robin
Williams with his mom; Whoopi
Goldberg and her look-alike daughter;
and John Voight with his then young
daughter, 12-year-old Angelina Jolie
(this year's Best Supporting Actress
winner for Girl Interrupted!).
"But nothing tops the fashions!
This was the year of the plunging back
and the plunging neckline. I am con-
vinced the young stars must eat one
carrot a day to stay this thin!
"Brad Pitt is absolutely gorgeous
and Cameron Diaz is a true natural
beauty Other years my fashion stand-
outs included an unknown Oscar win-
ner dressed only in gold American
Express cards! Edy Williams with one
breast outside her gown, Cher wearing
only one blue contact lens, Elizabeth
Taylor wearing her own diamonds,
not borrowed gems, including her
famous '40' carat ice cube!
"This year I produced an Oscar
'retrospective with Robin Singer at
CBS. Bryant Gumbel interviewed me
and we featured some of my favorite
Oscar moments in essay form. My
husband, Barry Solomon, spent hours
assisting me in selecting my most
memorable photographs.
"I will always remember pho-
tographing Audrey Hepburn, who
later invited me to join her in
Vietnam when she was working with
U.N.I.C.E.F. I will always regret I did
not take this assignment.
"I have had the opportunity to
photograph legends: Bette Davis,
Jimmy Stewart, Burt Lancaster and
my personal favorites — Barbra
Streisand, Kevin Costner, Goldie
Hawn and Burt Bacharach.
"When I reflect back, sometimes I
feel like it is all a dream." E
