Judaism At Its Most Basic

Beth Isaac

Here is a chance to make a real difference, to get involved in thiscom-
munity wide effort. Last year's program brought together 350 families
who opened their homes and hearts to their fellow Jews. People in
need of a seder dinner with their Mispacha!

Libby and I want to thank all who participated in 1999 and invite
more families this year to enjoy the mitzvah of "Hachnaset Orchim" -
the welcoming of guests at your seder table. We were all slaves in
Egypt and many people from the former Soviet Union have left slavery
in their lifetimes to come to America.

Join with Congregation Shaarey Zedek Mens Club and Yad Ezra to
make this a year to remember. If you have room for a family
(or if you need/want a place to go),

call us at our home phone, 248-851-0925.

Tell us your name, address, phone number, how many guests you can
accomodate (or are coming) and which seder you can either
host/attend. Thanks again for caring and sharing!

Chag Samayach from our family to yours.

Andy and Libby Beider

P.S. If you can't for some reason host a family but want to participate in feeding the hungry, don't
forget Maps Chitim—Kosher Passover food packages. Checks should be made payable to Yad Ezra.

future of Beth Isaac is uncertain.
A few months ago, the Jewish
Community Council of Metropolitan
Detroit sponsored a Town Hall meet-
ing in the Beth Isaac chapel to listen
to concerns; about 20 members
attended.
"Jewish identity and continuity have
been two of the more prominent
themes in our awimunity in the past
few years," said Howard Wallach,
immediate past president of the
Council and Town Hall moderator.
"It's been gratifying and invigorating to
know that, despite size and economic
issues, even smaller groups of Jews will
work together to try to not only pre-
serve our identity but make it flourish."
Council members learned there are
many Jewish-owned businesses in the
area, even if owners live elsewhere and
aren't as a group active in Trenton,
Freeling said. There is also a separate
Jewish community in nearby Monroe
that is without a temple and aligns
itself with the community in Toledo.
These Beth Isaac members have a
hunch that many interfaith couples
live in the area, but are not connected
with a synagogue. They hope to find a
way to connect with these Jews but
don t know how to find them.
"We're in trouble," Freeling said
simply.
