sor, Roni Bar-On, as attorney general.
Kristal placed no importance on
the Gallup Poll, saying prime ministe-
rial elections are always decided by
political events and campaign strategy
in the final couple of months before
election day.
Moreover, he forecast, Netanyahu
couldn't win, at least not now. "Even
though I'd say a little over half of the
voters identify with the right, too
many of them remember Netanyahu's
failures," the commentator said.
"He failed to implement the peace
process, the economy collapsed, so
many of his top allies deserted him,
his government fell, and he lost the
election by a landslide."
Kristal disagreed with a common
perception, that Netanyahu's rise in
popularity is due to a great extent to
the recent wave of public disappoint-
ment with Barak over the talks with
Syria, the seeming impossibility of
reaching a final-status agreement with
the Palestinians, and the entrench-
ment of high unemployment. "It takes
time for public disenchantment with
the government to set in, so it's still
soon," said Kristal.
But Likud Knesset Member Yuval
Steinitz, a Netanyahu protege, said
that now, after the talks with Syria
appear to have ended badly, the public
compares Barak's handling of the
negotiations with Netanyahu's, and
favors Netanyahu's approach.
"The public realizes that
Netanyahu was smarter, shrewder,
more careful," said Steinitz. "The dis-
satisfaction with Barak is even greater
over diplomatic affairs than it is on
socioeconomic issues."

Likud Knesset Member Michael
Eitan, who fought frequently and
openly with Netanyahu, said the for-
mer prime minister would be breaking
his post-election promises to his sup-
porters if he ran again so soon.
"He said he accepted responsibility
for his mistakes and foul-ups in office,
and was taking a leave of absence from
politics. If he runs again now, it will
look like this was all a ruse, like he
was just pulling the wool over people's
eyes."
That, however, was almost a year
ago. Now Netanyahu is once again the
hero of the Likud, and, if the Gallup
Poll means anything, he's at least a
credible challenger to the incumbent.
Bibi might well be back in the politi-
cal arena soon — if he can only beat
that bribery rap.
