he was happy to write his letter sup-
porting Edwards' nomination of
Jacob.
"Joel has been involved in that pro-
gram since the beginning,"
Montgomery said. "He has been on
the board and has helped in the direc-
tion of that program."
Keely Beene, marketing coordina-
tor for that Wal-Mart division, said
Competitive Edge began in 1993 as
a way for suppliers to help in a
scholarship program if their compa-
ny was not large enough to offer its
own. Since then, Competitive Edge
has grown to encompass an intern-
ship program that integrates 1,400
students into the suppliers' business-
es, a program that has been fueled
almost entirely by Jacob, Beene said.
"Oh, my goodness, yes, Joel is
probably the most active person in the
committee," she said enthusiastically.
Among his activities, Jacob has taken a
role in connecting students with the
suppliers, taken students to speak at

store openings and has spoken to
shareholders about the program at the
annual meeting.
"He shows that you can't just work
in a community, that you have to be

involved in your community as well.
He is one of the greatest people we

know," Beene said.
Lea Luger, Yad Ezra's development
director, said Jacob is well deserving of
the award. During his years as a board
member and currently as an advisory
board member, she said Jacob has
been a regular source of support and
direction for the agency.
"Joel is a wonderful network
machine," Luger said. "Whenever we
need something — whether it is plas-
tic bags to package the food or if we
want to meet someone — he is the
one to turn to. When we call him and
need him, he will help us if he can.

And we are just one of the organi-
zations he does this for," she contin-

ued. "We are lucky to have him." ❑
