Arab-Jewish
Honorees Named

The American Arab and Jewish
Friends (AAJF) will present its 2000
Community Service Award to Ed
Deeb, president of the Michigan Food
and Beverage Association, and Harvey
Weisberg, president of HLW
Investment Company, at AAJF's
awards and scholarship dinner Sunday,
May 7, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in
Dearborn.
Both Deeb and Weisberg were
instrumental in AAJF's inception and
have promoted greater friendships,
understanding and respect between
the Arab and Jewish communities.
Proceeds from the dinner will pro-
vide college scholarships for winners
of an essay contest for high school stu-
dents of Arab and Jewish descent. The
winners of the contest also will be
honored at the dinner.

Gan Shalom
For Children

Congregation Beth Shalom had an
informational meeting this week about
its new early childhood program, Gan
Shalom (garden of peace). A public
tour of the new facility at the syna-
gogue is scheduled for May 2.
Gan Shalom is geared for children
age 2 1/2 to pre-kindergarten. Child
development specialists Rena Amit
and Karol Chinitz are the teachers.
The self-paced curriculum includes
hands-on activities in art, music, sci-
ence and imaginative play. Hebrew
vocabulary, prayers and songs are inte-
gral parts of the program. Parent and
family involvement is encouraged.
Enrollment is limited to 15 chil-
dren.
