in the Secular Society." There are
several talks on kashrut, appropriate-
ly, including one with the inexplica-
ble title "Kosher for Passover
Products 1998." Any questions?

and send an e-mail to the experts.
Several links are also available,
one being an annotated database of
kosher restaurants.
The claim is that Kosherclub.com
is a secure site, but neither Netscape
nor Internet Explorer display the reas-
suring lock when you're ready to input
your credit card information. That
may make some would-be shoppers
nervous.
Koshermart.com lacks the meat and
poultry offerings found at
Kosherclub.com . Still, there are plenty
of items to choose from — even too
many in some cases. Who needs 12
different varieties of ice cream cones?
(They are listed, who knows why,
under the "ices and dessert toppings"
category!)
On Koshermart.com , you can
click into a kosher recipe file. More
interesting is the "Healthy Shopper"
button that lets the label readers
among us check the nutritional val-
ues of Koshermart's food wares. One

you're looking for to access a lengthy
list of products, grouped randomly,
which match your values. Gumballs,
pita bread, jelly, baby food — how
can you sift through the list without
needing some aspirin for your mar-
ket basket before checking out?
Speaking of checkout, the browser
flashes that comforting padlock with
Koshermart.com , unlike
Kosherclub.com .
Which site is the cheapest? A quick
comparison seems to suggest that the
two e-markets are similarly priced, but
it's hard to tell. For example,
Kosherclub.com has a 24-ounce jar of
Kedem gefilte fish for $3.33.
Koshermart.com , on the other hand,
offers two 24-ounce jars of Kedem
gefilte fish, one at $4.40 and the other
at $4.53. What's the difference?
There's no way of knowing.
One thing for sure: those of us
who live where we can shop for
kosher groceries the traditional way
are far better off. Kosherclub.com is
selling a two-pound bag of frozen
Empire chicken breast cutlets (which
the text reads as "1.3 pounds," but
the graphic shows as 32 ounces) for
$12.99. You can get the same bag
for $9.99 at Costco and recently I
bought it there for $6.99.
The food at these two Web sites,
however, will appease even the most
traditional observer of kashrut.
What's next? How about a Web site
where shoppers can "bid" on kosher
food, a la Priceline.com ?
