Baum earned bachelor's and mas- ter's degrees in education at Columbia University in New York before going on to study and teach vegetarian cook- ing. She has been a nutritional consul- tant for holistic doctors in Arizona, coordinator of seminars at the Kushi Foundation and a cook and cooking class assistant at the Macrobiotic Center of South Carolina. Tongue in cheek, Baum can say that vegetarianism even brought her romance. She met her husband after he enrolled in one of her classes in Arizona, where she also owned and operated the Flower House Dining Room and Lenore's Natural Cuisine. The couple moved to Michigan because of his work. "We looked at 70 houses before we picked ours," Baum explains about her search for a kitchen arrangement that would accommodate students. "My husband put the angled mirror over the stove so students could sit at the table and see what I was doing at the burners." Among her courses are Beginning Cooking, Yummy Soups, Menu Planning, Pressure Cooking and Tofu Dishes. Her students represent all age groups and have included women seeking new ideas for their Orthodox homes. Because Baum's work takes up so much of her time, she has few other interests. Her exercise comes from bicycling. "I was brought up in a Reform home and was confirmed, but the one ritual I continue is lighting the Sabbath candles, which actually is linked to our meals," says Baum, who is now busy cooking up a new book on vegetarian soups. ❑ Lenore Baum will sign her books 1-2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Whole Foods Market, 15 Mile at Coolidge in Troy, and 7- 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Borders, Orchard Lake and 14 Mile, in Farmington Hills.
