they were two of the victims of last
year's big snowstorm, who were
trapped on runways in Minneapolis
and Detroit for a total of seven hours.
They joined 16 others for a
Backroads Co. tour of the island,
including four days of biking, two
days of hiking and a half-day of
kayaking. They traveled for about 30
miles daily, although.some of the
older people on the tour moved at
their own pace. All of the participants
stayed at bed-and-breakfast homes
along the way.
"It was really great," said Lockman.
"We got to see a different and beauti-
ful part of North America, and the
main thing was that we were active all
of the time. It was a highly unusual
birthday celebration."
Lockman continued the birthday
celebration after the trip by partici-
pating in the U.S. Air Force
Marathon at Wright-Patterson Air
Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. He
and a few friends joined about 1,000
other runners for the 26-mile
marathon, which ended among a dis-
play of vintage airplanes from the
1930s and 1940s.
"We all did pretty well," said
Lockman, who runs six days a week
at home. "I had heard a lot about that
marathon and I always wanted to run
in it. It was a wonderful way to turn
50." CI
