ven before her daughter's
boyfriend proposed, Lynn
Levine contacted Simone
Vitale, her bandleader of
choice, to find out which dates he
had available.
Mrs. Levine, of West Bloomfield,
has experience in planning weddings;
this is her third.
"I know that when Simone's in
charge, he's going to run my party.
He takes care of everything: [when to
throw] the bouquet, [when to cut]
the cake. A good band makes you a
lady for the evening."
People's Choice bandleader Neal
Haber started his career in the
Catskills with "newcomers" Billie
Crystal, Andy Kaufman and J.J.
Walker. He has seen major changes,
especially in wedding bands over the

past 20 years. "Bands today must pro-
vide more than music to survive,"
says Haber. "Interactive entertain-
ment is the key."
Special-occasion bands now provide
everything from masters of ceremonies
(MCs), disc jockeys and dancers, who
not only get guests up on the dance
floor but lead them through the
moves. They can bring revolving disco
balls, transportation and costumes, to
dress like Diana Ross and the
Supremes or the Village People.
A young company known for its
flash, creativity and multi-services is
Star Trax in West Bloomfield. Partner
and director of social events Randy
Wertheimer, 27, says, "We bring the
energy level to the party."Several of
their MCs are so popular that bar/bat
mitzvah clients book "two, three, four
years in advance."
