etroit's philanthropic leadership, were honored
last week for two decades of fundraising and
support in the fight against cancer. The Barbara
Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute's newly renovated Berkley
Prevention Center was dedicated in their name.
The Silverman family ---- Lila and Gilbert, daughter
Wendy, son Buzz and his wife Jan — planned the renova-
tion and chose to honor the Herrnelins, longtime friends
who have donated more than $1 million to cancer research
as well as being catalysts for many other charitable causes.
Gilbert Silverman and David Hermelin are business part-
ners in real estate ventures.
The Berkley Prevention Center began seven years ago
with mammograms. The Woodward Avenue center later
added other prevention programs. It now offers screening
and diagnostic mammograms and clinical breast exams. It
performs about 350 mammograms a month.
