The Reverend John T Pawlikowski will
be the featured speaker at a Christian
Holocaust memorial service 3 p.m.
Sunday, April 9. The service is spon-
sored by the
Ecumenical Institute
for Jewish-Christian
Studies and will be held
at the Shrine of the
Little Flower in Royal
Oak.

Temple Beth El's spring adult edu-
cation mini-semester will begin
Wednesday, May 3. Scheduled are
Hebrew courses, Torah study and
the continuation of a monthly
lunch-and-learn series.
Course dates, with the exception
of Torah study and lunch and learn,
are May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. All
courses are open to the community.
Hebrew classes include Hebrew
II, Wednesday mornings 10:30-
11:30 a.m., with Lynne Roman;
Wednesday evenings, 7-8 p.m. with
Alan Lowen. Hebrew III is 10:30-
11:30 a.m. Wednesdays with Lea
Bruer. She will also teach a class in
conversational Hebrew Wednesday
evenings 6:30-7:30 p.m. Cost for
each Hebrew course is $25 for
members and $32 for non-mem-
bers.
Torah study, an ongoing exami-
nation of the Torah, will be led by
Lea Bruer Wednesdays at 9:30
a.m.; the fee is $17 for temple
members and $25 for non-mem-
bers. The group will also meet
April 5 and 12.
Two lunch-and-learn programs
are scheduled for Thursday, April 6,
and Thursday, May 4. Participants
will meet 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. for
lunch and discussion with commu-
nity leaders.
On April 6, Rick Loewenstein,
president of Gleaners
Commmunity Food Bank, will
speak on "Joseph Was the First
Food Banker: the Jewish Role of
Giving Back." On May 4, Alan
May, first vice president of Temple
Beth El and of the National
Conference for Community and
Justice, will be joined by NCCJ's
executive director, Dr. Daniel
Krichbaum, in a discussion of
"Work in the Sphere of Human
Relations: NCCJ, ADL and the
American Arab/Jewish Friends."
The fee per session is $12 for mem-
bers and $15 for non-members.

He has been honored by Christians,
Jews, civic groups and governments in
this country as well as Israel, Poland and
the Vatican. In 1980, President Jimmy
Carter appointed Father Pawlikowski to
the United States Holocaust Memorial
Council; Presidents George Bush and
Bill Clinton have reappointed him to
three successive terms.
The Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-
Christian Studies has designated Sunday,
April 9, as Holocaust Memorial Sunday.
This is the second year that the
Ecumenical Institute has called on
Christians to-commemorate the Nazis'
systematic murder of 6 million Jews and
5 million non-Jews.
In addition to the afternoon pro-
gram, the institute encourages Christians
to invite survivors and hidden children
to speak to their churches and also
encourages them to include special
prayers, readings, candlelightings or ser-
mons in their Sunday worship services
to commemorate the day.
The afternoon service is open to the
public.

Shir Shalom
Honors Cardinal

Temple Shir Shalom will present
Adam Cardinal Joseph Maida with
the Temple Shir Shalom Open
Doors Mezuza Award 8 p.m. Friday,
April 28, at Shabbat services.
The award is presented annually
to those who exemplify outreach and
innovation in interfaith relations.

Professional Recognition

Miriam Starkman, executive director of Hillel of Metro Detroit, recently was
cited by International Hillel as an exemplar of excellence. This honor is given to
a few Hillel professionals each year who demonstrate the highest performance
standards in the field. Starkman, shown with Richard M Joel president and
international director of Hille• the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, has
been at Hillel of Metro Detroit for eight years. She oversees programs for Jewish
young adults and college students at Wayne State University, Oakland
University, Univesity of Detroit Mercy, Lawrence Technological University'
Oakland Community College and throughout the community.

A Torah Is Born

The children learned how a Torah is created and saw a Torah unscrolled.
