yet to have a bar or bat mitzvah party,
it has been a unique spot for wed-
dings, fund-raisers, parties and event
concerts, such as one for the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
featuring Peter, Paul and Mary.
While the Opera House is not
for every bride because it is quite
pricey — $12,000 for outside
groups — Turner notes that the
building itself is beautiful, and
doesn't need a lot to dress it up for
a party. It is also available most of
the summer because no operas are
being performed.
Lifecycle events can be a great
excuse for throwing a fun party. Take
the 50th birthday celebration for
West Bloomfield's Judy Schram in
January. It started out as a mystery
weekend away with four girlfriends,
but ended up as a wild and wonderful
weekend for many of Judy's friends
and family at the Double JJ Resort in
Rothbury, outside Muskegon.
"I thought the five of us girls were
going on a mystery weekend,"
Schram recalls. "I had to pack diverse
clothing, from warm clothes, like ski
clothes, to a bathing suit. I had to fig-
ure it out from a word search. I was
totally clueless."
On the appointed Friday, she left
for a mystery car ride with her friends,
enjoying hors d'oeurves in the car.

Not recognizing the road signs, she
was unsure of where they were going.
The group made a stop in East
Lansing, blindfolded the birthday girl,
and walked her into the SDT sorority
house (she had been at SDT at the
University of Michigan), and the
sorority girls sang "Happy Birthday."
The last 15 minutes of the trip, she
was blindfolded again. "They took me
into this building, and took off the
blindfold, and I'm in a rural, western-
style diner. I thought it was so cute,"
she says.
"Suddenly, a crowd of people came
from behind every nook and cranny,
and yelled 'Surprise!' I was beyond
shocked. They were worried I was
going to faint!"
Judy, her husband Brad, family
and friends enjoyed the weekend
package at the Double JJ. A year-
round facility, with one-bedroom log
cabins with individual Jacuzzis, the
Schram party took advantage of cross-
country skiing and snowshoeing,
horseback riding, sleigh rides, tubing
and dog-sleigh rides.
During the summer, the resort offers
golf, horseback riding, pools with
waterslides, target sports, a mechanical
bull and Friday night rodeos.
"It's a beautiful facility, and it made
turning 50 absolutely doable — even
wonderful," Schram says.
