with the Shiffman Fund, Federation
will match, for constituent schools
only, all money received through the
Cohn Fund. However, unlike the
Cohn Fund, the Shiffman Fund
applies to day schools from all
streams of Judaism.
Schools will be allocated funds
based on decisions by the Cohn
Advisory Committee, not based on
the percentage of students enrolled.
Once they receive money from either
fund, schools are free to distribute
scholarships as they see fit, said
Andrew Echt, Federation's senior
campaign associate.
Avern Cohn and his father Irwin
were the first father-son recipients of
the Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award
for Distinguished Community Service
— Irwin in 1961 and Avern in 1988.
Founding chairperson of the
Federation's Leonard N. Simons
Jewish Community Archives, Cohn
has lectured widely on Jewish histor-
ical, political and legal topics. With
his sister, Rita Haddow, he endowed
the Cohn/Haddow Center for Judaic
Studies at Wayne State University in
Detroit.
Day schools, once thought to be a
remnant of shtetl society, are actually
the wave of the future, Cohn said.
As Detroit's Jewish community has
scattered throughout the metropolitan
area, he said, it has become more and
more difficult to retain Jewish identifi-
cation through after-school programs.
When Cohn's own children were
young, the family lived in
Huntington Woods. His children
-
went to Roeper School in Bloomfield
Hills, then were rushed to
Congregation Shaarey Zedek for their
religious education.
"The logistics would become
impossible," Cohn said. "Kids [some-
times] would drop out — they're not
interested. Therefore, by putting them
in an environment that provides both
Jewish and secular education in a sin-
gle building, you get a much better
educational mix. It's much easier to
move them forward."
