I
back to tradition," said Terri Morris,
who has managed the Hamakor
Gallery Ltd. in Skokie, Ill. for the
-
past 11 years.
"The tendency seems to be less
avante garde, more traditional. It's
more like the kinds of things your
grandparents would have had."
In fact, Morris has seen a return to
giving tzedaka boxes as a way for a
new couple to make giving a part of
their life together.
"There are beautiful tzedaka boxes
that are replicas of synagogues
throughout the world," said Morris.
Beyond that, anything by artist Gary
Rosenthal, who works in metals like
brass and copper, is very popular.
At Rosenblum's World of Judaica
in Chicago, owner Avrom Fox has
seen different trends among young
married couples. Currently, every cou-
ple wants an artistic ketuba, the mar-
riage contract. Whether a lithograph
or a commissioned piece of art, cou-
ples value the ketuba as an official
reminder of the legality of their
Jewish marriage.
"It's becoming almost a given that
couples buy these artistic ketubot„
frame them, and hang them on the
wall," said Fox. Their popularity can
be measured in numbers: This past
year, Fox estimates he sold several
hundred kettubot, while 10 years ago
he sold a few dozen.
"Twenty to 40 years ago, these
kinds of ketubot were not available.
People had to pay upwards of $2,000
for a custom-made one, which is why
there are scores of these beautiful lith-
ographs, which almost look original,"
he said.
Rosenblum's offers nearly 200 lith-
ographs, representing dozens of artists
from around the country. Some are
limited editions, and all are cus-
tomized for the couples. A lithograph
can cost between $100 and $300.
On a more sociological note, Fox
has seen a melding of denominational
lines when it comes to traditional
practices. He cites the popularity-
among Jews frordall religious back-
grounds of the bride buying a tallit
for her bridegroom. "Denominational
lines have fallen down for certain
basic traditions," said Fox. "There is a
resurgence in general in Jewish
knowledge and in an understanding
