JN: Who is usually the most outra-
geous dresser?
PF: Courtney Love, who is a crossover
from the music industry. Cher, who
has had a successful collaboration with
Bob Mackie. And Bette Midler, a wild
woman! Her most successful look is
when she is a little more tailored — it
gives her a taller, thinner look.

JN: How important is jewelry?
PF: Jewelry is very important. I just
heard from Harry Winston that [his
firm] purchased Marilyn Monroe's cos-
tume rhinestone earrings at an auction
and has re-created them in diamonds.
They look like chandeliers on each ear.
I don't know who, but someone may
show up wearing them. Some people
choose their jewelry first, like Oprah
Winfrey and Elizabeth Taylor, who
[own their own jewelry] and have
gowns designed around it.

JN: Do any of the stars actually pur-
chase the necklaces, earrings and
bracelets from the big-name jewelers
like Harry Winston, or is everything
on loan? •
PF: Usually it's on loan. [But] when
Gwyneth Paltrow's father bought her
the necklace she wore last year, that was
a major indicator we may be at the
beginning of a new trend — top
celebrities wanting to show their success
andpower by owning their own dia-
monds. They used to own their own
jewels many years ago, but then you
saw the same pieces over and over
again, which was acceptable back then.
But I think we will be seeing that again.
Nine years ago when I began, not every
star was loaned diamonds. Now, every-
one is, including wives of directors and
producers. So where do you go from
there? I think it's ownership; that's how
you set yourself apart.

JN: What are the stars most con-
cerned about when picking a dress?
PF: Everyone wants to choose a_gown
that will make her look taller and
thinner. And they want to find a flat-
tering color and a great neckline. The
hair and make-up have to go togeth-
er. Everything has to match..

JN: Do you think there will many
surprises this year?
PF: I am sure. That's the thing about
fashion: It is theater and there is
always something to talk about! 111
