If the dress is on loan, do they get to keep it? PS: Ifa dress is truly couture, it can run upward to $100,000. Ifa gown is pret-a- porter (ready to wear), it can run $3,000- $4,000. The stars almost never pay for the dresses, and if the designer has an association with the star, the dress can be hers to keep. In 1996, Elizabeth Shue bought a gown from a store in LA. It was very unusual because she took it off the rack, didn't go through a designer and paid for it herself. JN: Who are the hottest designers this year? PF: Georgio Armani has made the biggest impact at the Academy Awards over the past decade, and he continues to do so. Badgley Mischka's design team has a nice showing, as do Vera Wang, Pamela Dennis, Richard Tyler and Ralph Lauren. In fact, it was Ralph Lauren who designed for Gwyneth Paltrow last year, and that was a real coup, because he hasn't been one of those designers typically seen at the Academy Awards. Barbra Streisand has been wearing Donna Karan at her recent appearances. Personally, I would like to see her in something long and slinky and not in knit and casual sweaters that she ties over her shoulder. JN: What about the men? Do people pay much attention to the men's attire? PF: It depends on the year. A couple of years ago, Quincy Jones produced the show, and because he is so interest- ed in fashion, there was a change in attire. You saw men wearing dia- monds, tie tacks, stick pins. The year before that, the long frock coat was in. Last year there was nothing unusual. JN: How will this year differ from past years? PF: The stars involved always make the difference. That's why it's a different fashion show each year. Which design- ers will run the race is yet to be seen. PF: I think it will be Gwyneth Paltrow, like last year. I like what she did last year. She wanted an innocent, feminine look and wore a garment that created that image. It was a pink Ralph Lauren gown with little spaghetti straps and it worked perfectly. Some people talked about the ill fit of the gown, but her purpose was the waif ingenue look and she certainly achieved it with that dress.
