Balkan Jews
Band Together
Jews from half a
Macedonia/JTA
dozen Balkan states formed an umbrella
group. "There are very few Jews in the
Balkans," said Viktor Mizrachi, presi-
dent of the 200-member Jewish com-
munity of Macedonia. "Each can love
his own country, but we have to form a
fist, or we will disappear."
The Union of Jewish Communities
of Southeastern Europe plan to buttress
their tiny communities, share burdens
and facilities, and work collectively on
common concerns.

Jesuit Didn't
Blame Jews
A high-ranking Jesuit
New York/JTA
official who was quoted as saying Jews
were responsible for the death of Jesus
said his comments were taken out of
context.
The Rev. Peter Gumpel, whom the
Vatican appointed to lead the beatifica-
tion effort for the controversial wartime
pope, Pius XII, says that while he told
Canadian jotenalists that Jewish leaders
urged Pontius Pilate to crucify Jesus, he
did not say that the Jews were responsi-
ble for Jesus' death.
