War Crimes Trial
May Never Resume

Jewish Lawmaker
Asked About Beliefs

Vienna/JTA — The trial of an aging
neurologist accused in the deaths of
nine children in a Nazi-run euthana-
sia clinic was suspended indefinitely
after a psychiatrist testified the defen-
dant was suffering from dementia.
The trial of Heinrich Gross, 84,
closed about a half hour after it
began, and it appeared unlikely that
proceedings will ever resume. He is
alleged to have participated in the
killings at a clinic in Vienna, where
some 700 children, deemed physical-
ly or mentally impaired by the Nazis,
were put to death. Gross is the first
war crimes suspect to be charged in
Austria since 1975.

Lexington, Ky./JTA — A Jewish state
legislator from Kentucky was ques-
tioned about her religious beliefs dur-
ing discussion about a bill that would
allow the Ten Commandments to be
posted in classrooms and public prop-
erty. State Rep. Kathy Stein responded
to questions about Jesus by saying,
"The Jewish faith does not believe he
was the Messiah." The bill, which the
House passed by a vote of 77-17, now
goes to the state Senate.

Kiev/JTA — The Great Synagogue of
Kiev was slated to reopen this week
after years of reconstruction financed
by local Jewish leaders.
Built in 1898, the synagogue in
the Ukrainian capital was confiscated
by the Soviets in 1926. Under the
Nazi occupation, it was used as a sta-
ble. After World War II, it was used
as a puppet theater before being
returned to the community.

Museum Exhibits
Nazi-Looted Art

New York/JTA
The Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York admitted
that it has a Nazi-looted painting in
its collection. Museum officials said
the Nazis likely looted "Guardroom
With the Deliverance of Saint Peter,"
by the 17th-century Flemish painter
David Teniers the Younger, in Vienna
in 1938.

American and Israeli

between firms in the two countries.
The privately funded U.S.-Israel

of an Internet site where investors
can learn about new products. The
site is expected to be up in June.

Iranian Ban
Partially Lifted

Washington/JTA — As a goodwill gesture
toward newly elected reformers in Iran's
government, U.S. Secretary of State
Madeleine Albright announced the lift-
ing of a ban on imports of Iranian pista-
chios, caviar and carpets:
She also said U.S. officials would
closely watch the upcoming trial of 13
Iranian Jews accused of espionage as
"one of the barometers of U.S.-Iran rela-
tions." However, advocates for the 13
said. the U.S. should not make any con-
cessions until the Jews are released.

Christian Study
At Hebrew U.

Jerusalem/JTA — The Hebrew
University established what is believed to
be the first Christian study center at an
Israeli university.
Research at the Center for the
Study of Christianity, established with
a grant from a Christian family from
Belgium, will emphasize the role of
Christianity in the Holy Land and the
historical relationship between
Christianity and Judaism.

Death Camp
Is Defaced

Rome/JTA — Antisemitic graffiti was
scrawled on the outer walls of the for-
mer San Sabba death camp near Trieste
in northern Italy, the only World War II
death camp on Italian soil.
The grafirti included a star of David
hanging from a gallows, and the
German slogan Juden raus
"out with
the Jews."
