Workshop Focus
Is Literacy

The second lecture in the Shiffman
series, tided "Israel: A Journey Toward
Peace," will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
April 6, at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield.
Zvi Gitelman, professor of political
science at the University of Michigan
and director of the Frankel Center for
Judaic Studies, and Rabbi David
Geffen, director of Common
Denominator, will speak on "Religious
Cleavages in Israel Today."
Professor Gitelman has written 10
books and numerous articles on
Israeli, Soviet and East European
politics. Rabbi Geffen's Common
Denominator is an Israel organiza-
tion committed to unifying the
Jewish people.

The Detroit Jewish Coalition for
Literacy will conclude its first full year
with a Monday, April 3, volunteer
workshop at Hadassah House in West
Bloomfield.
The 6:30-8:30 p.m. program will
feature area educators who will help
new and veteran literacy volunteers get
involved.
Gwen Graham of Walled lake
Consolidated Schools will facilitate a
session tided "Fine Tuning Tutoring
Techniques for Volunteers." Librarians
Valerie Meyerson and Rachel Erlich
will conduct a how-to session titled
"Book Talk Fiction, Short Stories and
Poetry for Young Readers."
The coalitiOn participates in special
efforts such as the Reach Out and Read
program at Providence Hospital as well
as tutoring/reading programs in 24
schools in Oakland and Wayne coun-
ties. Chaired by Jewish Community
Council Vice President Ann Zousmer,
the DJCL is an affiliate of the National
Jewish Coalition for Literacy.

Spirituality, Medicine
Is Doctors' Topic

Jewish physicians and their spouses will
join local rabbis for a discussion on
"Bringing Spirituality Into Medical
Practice," 6 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at
Congregation Beth Ahm.
Topics to be discussed include
how spirituality is practiced, if and
when to pray with patients and the
spiritual impact a physician can have
on patients.
The program will begin with a wine
reception sponsored by the Young
Doctors Group of the Maimonides
Society. Speakers and a kosher dinner
will follow at 6:45 p.m.

Shir Shalom, Rabbi Herbert
Yoskowitz of Adat Shalom
Synagogue and Rabbi E.B. (Bunny)
Freedman of Jewish Hospice and
Chaplaincy Network will speak.
Sponsored by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
Community Outreach and Education
Department, the Maimonides Society
seeks to strengthen bonds with the
Jewish community and Israel through
educational, social and charitable
activities.

Israeli Consul
Leads Discussion

"The Life of a Diplomat" and
"Ethiopian Jewish Culture and the
Ethiopian experience of immigration
and Absorption" will be the discussion
topics of Israeli Consul Belaynesh
Zevadia at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 30,
at Marygrove College.
The Chicago-based diplomat also
will discuss the Ethiopian Jewish expe-
rience within the context of diversity in
Judaism 7:30 that evening at.
Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy.
- The Marygrove talk and kosher
reception will take place at the college's
Denk Chapman Hall, in the Madame
Cadillac Building, 8425 West
McNichols at Wyoming, Detroit.
Zevadia, Israel's first Ethiopian-born
diplomat, was born and raised in the
Gondar Province and her father was
the chief rabbi of the Ethiopian Jewish
community.
Both events are free and open to
the public.
