Esther K. Shapiro, champion of civil
rights and consumer advocate, will
receive this year's
Lifetime
Achievement Award
from the Anti-
Defamation League
at its fourth annual
Women of
Achievement awards
dinner 6 p.m.
Tuesday, April 4, at
St. John's Cultural
Esther Shapiro
Center in
Southfield.
Shapiro will be
the keynote speaker at the dinner. Her
topic is "Why Not: Choices for the
Next Century."
She and her late husband, Harold,
were involved in numerous organiza-
tions and campaigns to further the cause
of religious and ethnic equality. They
founded Michigan Friends of the South,
an organization in support of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr., the freedom
marches and other civil rights activities.
In 1974, Mayor Coleman Young
appointed her as the first director of
Detroit's Consumer Affairs Department.
Shapiro continues her advocacy efforts
as a consultant to numerous non-profit
organizations and serves as an adviser to
Maryann Mahaffey, the president pro-
tern of the Detroit City Council.
The ADL also will honor Sharon E.
Bernard of Michign National; Elaine
C. Driker of Wayne State University
Helen B. Love, recently retired from
Ford Motor Company; and Marianne
Udow of Blue Cross-Blue Shield of
Michigan.

A cantors concert featuring Cantor
Charles David Osborne will be held
7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at
Congregation B'nai
Moshe.
Conductor and
composer, Cantor
Osborne, of Boston, •
is a graduate of the
Cantors Institute of
the Jewish
Theological
Cantor
Seminary of America.
Osborne
He has made numer-
ous appearances as
soloist with the Zamir Chorale of
Boston and New York. He also has
appeared on television and radio.
Cantor Osborne is founder and
director of Kol Rinah-the Jewish
Youth Chorus of Greater Boston
and was the first music director of
the Hazamir Summer Choral Tour
of Israel.
The April 5 concert will also fea-
ture the voices of second-grade stu-
dents in B'nai Moshe's LIFE pro-
gram, the Hillel Day School Choir
and the B'nai Moshe Adult Choir.
Pianist Paul Rodgers, Cantor
Osborne's vocal coach and accompa-
nist, will also perform. The concert
is free.

ing project of the Michigan

United Synagogue of Conservative

Brotherhood Night

The Michigan Jewish War Veterans
and Ladies Auxiliary will present their
annual Brotherhood Night, 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, March 28, at the JWV
Memorial Home, 16990 West 12 Mile
Road, Southfield.
Speakers and honorees for the
evening will be: Rabbi Paul M.
Yedwab, Temple Israel; James D. Grey,
past president, Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan; Lila Lazarus,
health reporter, WDIV-TV Channel
4. The Four Chaplains presentation
will be made by the Rev. Henry
Reinwald.
Past Department Commander and
Chief of Staff Milton Klein will chair
the event under the overall supervision
of State Commander Robert Feldman
and Auxiliary President Shirley
Schlussel.
