scored an immortal portrait of Captain
Queeg in The Caine Mutiny."
Of all his works, Wouk names the
semi-autobiographical Inside, Outside
his personal favorite. "I have called it
a Kaddish for my father, the chief
influence of my life," he says. "It is as
honest a portrait of a man as I could
draw, affectionate and true: a first-
generation immigrant who sacrificed
his health and his life for his chil-
dren.
"Remember that I began my career
writing comedy scripts for Fred Allen,
so humor is important in my work
and I believe some of the funniest
scenes I've ever written are in this
book, especially the celebrated
sequence of Bobboh's sauerkraut."
In the course of his career, Wouk
has had the opportunity to travel fre-
quently to Israel, where his novels The
Glory and The Hope both are set. He
became acquainted with many of that
country's leaders.
In The Will To Live On, Wouk
poignantly relates his relationship with
Ben Gurion and Yitzhak Rabin. "Ben
Gurion and Yitzhak Rabin were both
great leaders, very different in charac-
ter," he says.
"Ben Gurion was in the first
instance a powerful political personali-
ty with iron resolve and a deep grasp
of issues. He loved to talk and to phi-
losophize, given the lecture.
"Yitzak Rabin was first and last a
soldier. In the War of Independence,
he led the fight for the road to
Jerusalem and half a century later he
died a soldier's death, though the bul-
lets were an assassin's. In person he
was strangely shy and taciturn until
one came to know him well. He had a
strong, quiet sense of humor, but one
gathered that only by his subtle com-
ments and quick, brief smiles.
"I loved them both."
At an advanced age, Wouk main-
tains his ability for storytelling, and
his passion for Israel and Judaism are
as strong as ever. Another long-term
commitment has been his 54-year-old
marriage to Betty Sarah Brown, a non-
Jew who converted to Judaism. The
couple live in Palm Springs and occa-
sionally return to their home in
Washington, D.C.
"A lifetime of living and studying
Judaism has only taught me how little
I know, writes Wouk. "But that little I
would share with others who love our
people, who are concerned by the
changes sweeping over Jewry and who
would welcome a few thoughts from
one who has reached a great age still
studying."
