Makin' Up Is Hard To Do

Detroit native
David Syner
looks forward to
an award show
that recognizes
the creative talents
of Hollywood's
make-up artists.

F

or years, film and television award
shows have acknowledged the
achievements of actors, directors,
writers and producers, while make-
up artists and hairstylists have taken a back seat.
But now, thanks to the initiative of make-up
artist David Syner, the creative stylists behind
the camera are about to be recognized.
On Sunday, March 19, the first annual
Hollywood Make-up Artist and Hairstylist Guild
Awards will be held in Los Angeles. The special
presentation, says Syner, will be taped for broad-
cast over the Internet on wwwhollywood.com .
"There was a time when we used to have
such prestige and our credits on the movie
screen were up there with the actors,". says
Syner. "But slowly Hollywood has put the hair
and make-up people lower and lower down
the ladder. I just wanted to bring some of that
prestige back, and I am hoping we can do that
through this award show."
Originally, Syner proposed the idea to a
group of industry insiders who suggested he
form a committee. "I got together 12 people,
and from there it just blossomed," says
Syner. "Without their tremendous help, it
would have never gotten to this level. [The
show] is being produced by Dick Clark. This
is beyond our dream."
During the two-hour-long award ceremony
to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, awards
will be presented in 17 categories, including
best contemporary make-up in a feature film,
best character make-up, best special effects
