all spiffed up to teach and she asked
me if I hadn't graduated already. I
told her that I had and that I was
there as a teacher. I thought she
would fall off her chair. She sat for a
full minute as I reminded her that
she had told me to go to trade
school. 'Ms. Christy,' I said, 'I was
an honor graduate in education.' As
she took out a bottle of liquor, she
said, 'I might as well get drunk now
because I have seen everything!'
"If you wanted to avoid the cafe-
teria, a trip across Wyoming to the
Stirrup was in order. Out in front I
can still remember my late friend,
lawyer Mike Gantz, standing there
in a black leather jacket with metal
studs, ducktail haircut and studded
gloves. During our later years at our
lunches we would talk about the
other bigger guys, Jeffrey Kahn, Dr.
Joel Dreyer, Norm Ruby and Terry
O'Neil, all of whom could have
been in the John Travolta movie
with Russi Welch and Frances
Yaslove in the female roles."

gallons of house dressing.
Every week at the Farmington
Hills location of
Pizza on
Northwestern Highway, Laverne
Hatchett prepares 400 gallons of -
soup ... and 160 of those gallons are
minestrone.
THE SHEIK will remain in West
Bloomfield ... although also return-
ing to Detroit ... with the opening
of a second location ... on
Woodward and Congress.
Owner Dean Hachem also will
open a third location ... having been
selected as the Middle-Eastern
restaurant to be at Metropolitan
Airport's coming middle terminal ...
La Shish was second choke.
THE NEW executive chef at Golden
Mushroom, 10 Mile and Southfield
roads, is a good one ... Randy Emert
comes from Paint Creek, taking the
place of Darin Moore ... This is another
feather in the culinary cap of restaurant
owner Reid Ashton ... Randy's dishes are
wonderful ... without all the unnecessary
sauces that so many chefs use to "ginger-
bread" their presentations but actually
take away the good taste. 111
