A Michigan Press Association Newspaper of the Year The Many Faces Of Purim Happy Purim! eople have a right to be different — that's Purim's lesson. Haman wanted to destroy our people because he said we were different from the Persians. He said we had our own customs, beliefs and ways of wor- ship. po What he didn't know, or care about, was that it's okay to be different within the framework of democratic ideals. The free- dom to be different is played out in the story of Purim, a story of intrigue as much as survival. Persian Jews, led by Mordechai and his relative, Queen Esther, called the day that Haman was hanged Purim, the Feast of Lots, because he had chosen the day to destroy the Jews by drawing lots. Today's themed edition explores the Purim celebration — a joyous event recounted in the Book of Esther — a day when you are supposed to do so much cele- brating by eating, drinking and having a good time, you get all mixed up. As part of the fun, we're running a spoof ad somewhere within these 148 pages. After you spot it, look for the Purim Contest ad on page 16 to learn how to become eligible for a random drawing that will identify the two contest winners. Meanwhile, remember that Purim also is a day for sharing — giving gifts to family and friends and being generous to those in need. Rejoicing, revelry, reaching out — that's Purim. 6 People Who Need Purim Unity among Jews is strengthened with every gift of charity or treats. 7 Beyond Mordechai And Esther What some of the best-dressed clergy are wearing this Purim. 50 Calendar A myriad of community events for the holiday. 69 Queens And Lemontashen The story of Purim, according to Temple Emanu-El second-graders. 78 Glorious Groggers The pursuit of clamor delivers groggers with glamour. 96 Web Games Chabad's page takes the cake, but there's lots of Purim online. 103 A Feast Of Sweets * A variety of hamantashen for a sweet holiday. s Week www.detroitjewishnews.com March 17, 2000 II Adar 10, 5760 Vol. CXVII, No. 4 DEPARTMENTS 123 Aleibet'cha 69 AppleTree Bar/Bat Mitzvah 57 Births . . ...... . 56 Business . . . . . . . 113 Calendar . . . . . 50 Carla Schwartz . 112 Community ..... 41 Crossword .. . . . . . 93 . . .
