six-year fight to remain in the
United States came to an
abrupt end when the
Immigration and
Naturalization Service took accused
Nazi Ferdinand Hammer, 78, from his
home in Sterling Heights and put him
on a plane to Vienna, Austria, on
Monday.
Since 1994, the U.S. Department of
Justice Office of Special Investigations
has tried to deport Hammer, a retired
foundry supervisor who became a nat-
uralized citizen in 1963. A grandson
accompanied him to Austria, and his
wife will join him there.
The OSI proved that
Hammer served in the
Nazi SS Death's Head
battalion as a corporal at
the German death camps
at Auschwitz (Poland),
Ferdinand
Sachsenhausen and
Hammer
Flossenburg, both in
Germany. Hammer
denied being a death camp guard. He
said he fought only on the Russian
front and had never heard of Nazis or
concentration camps until after the war.
Prosecutors also showed how
Hammer, a Romanian native, had
obtained an entry visa to the United
States in 1955, and eventual citizen-
ship by supplying erroneous informa-
tion about his wartime activities.
"This was a case of justice delayed,
but justice applied," said Donald
Cohen, director of the Michigan
Regional Office of the Anti-
Defamation League. "Hammer had
the full benefit of the American justice
system and was properly denaturalized
and deported for lying on his immi-
gration documents."
Cohen noted that while Hammer
may be in ill health today, his health
deteriorated while fighting the depor-
tation order against him.
"Hammer lived in freedom in this
country for almost 40 years and took
advantage of the best our nation has to
offer before his past caught up with
him," Cohen said. "It is hard to feel
sorry for him, though certainly his family
is paying the price for his misdeeds." El
