D

id you hear the one about the tourist and the

waiter...?*

For a Jew, life and laughter go together. And on

Purim, that merriest of holidays, we can laugh

as loud as we want — at our enemies and at

ourselves. Why not? On this day nearly 2,500 years

ago, our people escaped disaster at the hands of

a wicked viceroy and went on to celebrate their

deliverance.

True, there've been many Hamans after that one.

But, bottom line? We're still here and our old

enemies aren't.

To all the heroic Mordechais and Queen Esthers

in Jewish history (and to all the little Mordechais

and Esthers in costume who will make us smile),

l'chayim! Thank you for making Purim a celebration

of Jewish life.

*For the record, here's how it goes:

A tourist walks into a delicatessen and asks the waiter what's good to eat.
The waiter replies, "You name it, we got it"

So the tourist begins calling off his favorites from back home: gefilte fish,
knishes, chicken soup with kneidlach, corned beef. The waiter keeps shak-
ing his head no to all of them.

Finally, the tourist says, "I thought you said if I named it, you've got it."

The waiter answers, 'That's right, but you didn't name it yet"
