Schwinn Black Beauty came into
view; my childhood was indeed wan-
ing. Soon I was to meet Buffalo
Betty and the 'midget' and dance
with girls while 'Earth Angel' played
in the background while eating
corned beef sandwiches at Fredson's
on Wyoming.
"I could go to Lou Salesin's
Mumford Music and listen to
records before I bought them or
sample the rites of passage with a
cigarette in the powerhouse at
Mumford with Teddy Brode. I could
shop at Norman Allan's jewelry store
where you could get anything at a
price.
"My cousin, Larry Kepes, used to
have these preppy blue oxford-cloth
shirts and every time I went to Jerry
Morse on Livernois and Seven Mile,
they were out of my size. It took me
40 years to find a shirt maker in
Connecticut to get some of them.
By that time the size changed, too.
"I also met up with a plastic
navel, Buffalo Betty and the midget,
The Four Scores (Harvey Yates, Jerry
Starr, Mark Owens and Bob
Hecker), Joni Frimet and her ever-
present Mumford letter sweater,
Judy Ackerman, whose father's law
office would later be mine but she
didn't know I existed. I'd swim in
the backyard pool in the alley at
Sidney Hill on Eight Mile (because
Judy Ackerman was there) with my
closest friend, the late Larry
Edelheit, who could and did under-
stand me better than anyone. My
friends from Perfection DeMolay
were Howard Stone, Gary Rosenblat
and Gary Berger, who all stood up at
my wedding in 1962; Marlene
Tanenbaum, who married her col-
lege sweetheart and is still my
friend, Mike Aller, who is an official
with the City of Miami Beach and
won't return my phone calls, and
finally Barbara Rosenblat, who sat
behind me in every class in high
school and college and brought her
best girlfriend, Marsha Rosenberg,
along with her on the only date we
had. How many Mumford men got
to the drive-in on Eight Mile Road
with two girls?
"Finally, I remember the first day
of spring when all the convertibles
would come out. I still want a red
'53 Ford Sunliner like Mike Kent
had. I used to dream about stealing
one and taking Flo Krandall for a
ride. My dream was partly realized
when she used to ask me for rides to
Ann Arbor to visit her boyfriend,
Walter Dishell, who wound up as a
