politics; it's about going out and
doing things." This year's gathering
also reflects the long-term trend of
more spiritual and religious content
— and more of a focus on domestic
political issues instead of the tradi-
tional emphasis on Israel.
UJC is still working out new
modes of operation in the wake of
the merger, but Selber said that will
have little impact on the young lead-
ership extravaganza.
"If anything, this conference will
point a shining light on the new enti-
ty," she said. "This is a very commit-
ted group of young people standing
up to say that despite mergers, despite
change, we really believe in rescue and
release and making a difference in the
world. This organization is a tremen-
dous vehicle for doing that."

Orthodox Veep?

Political observers are downplaying
the recent ripple of talk about Sen.
Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) as a lead-
ing candidate to join Al Gore on the
Democratic ticket.
Lieberman — the only Orthodox
Jew in the Senate — would be the
first Jewish vice presidential nominee
from a major party.
Much of the talk seems to be com-
ing from close Lieberman supporters,
who say he would add rock-solid
integrity to a ticket that is seen as
vulnerable to GOP attacks based on
Gore's past fund-raising practices and
his- connections to a morally tainted
Bill Clinton.
"If you want the anti-Clinton, he's
the man," said American University
political scientist Allan J. Lichtman,
an expert in presidential prognostica-
tion. But a Lieberman nomination, he
said, could alienate the party's more
liberal base. A bigger problem:
Lieberman's nomination would antag-
onize Gore's current boss. Lieberman
was an early Clinton supporter — and
a rumored vice presidential possibility
back in 1992 — but he broke with
the president in 1998 over the White
House sex scandal.
Democratic sources say Gore
wants to distance himself from
Clinton as the campaign progresses,
but that he's not interested in an
open breach.
A leading Jewish Democrat raised
a different objection.
"Traditionally, the vice presidential
nominee- is supposed to be the
ball player," this source said. "That's
not Joe Lieberman's character; he's not
going to be the slashing candidate." ❑
