And while English is one of two offi- cial Canadian languages and is the pre- dominant spoken language, Blanchard struggled with interpreting language dif- ferences. "Tabling an issue [in Canada] does not mean brushing it off," he explained. "Rather it means it's there, on the table to be discussed." Blanchard is promoting his book Behind the Embassy Door. One story he described was of the first official visitor he hosted as ambassador, with his wife in their new Ottawa home. It was Virginia Kelley, mother of President Bill Clinton. Blanchard laughed as he explained that Mrs. Kelley had two causes: breast cancer awareness and horseracing. Canadian-born Michael Benchetrit, 32, concurred with much of the former ambassador's talk. The Farmington Hills resident has lived in the United States for eight years and works as an immi- gration attorney. `.`A lot of what was said tonight was pretty much to the point," said Benchetrit. "I came up with the same parallels, having also lived in both countries. Although the cultures may be differ- ent, the Jewish community is active in both countries, and that serves as the common thread that will lead young adults to become involved in politics. In both countries it seems that this group has learned to use the political process as a forum for having impor- tant issues voiced." ❑ Blue Nile Evening Set JN Online will celebrate this year's Oscar event with its annual contest.
